Ex-UFC champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk's message for critics: I will be more 'cocky,' 'arrogant' and 'loud'

SHANGHAI – Joanna Jedrzejczyk’s first pro MMA loss might have cost her a UFC belt, but it has in no way shaken her confidence.

Jedrzejczyk was on the losing end of one of the year’s biggest upsets, when a first-round knockout gave Rose Namajunas the 115-pound title earlier this month at UFC 217. Given the particularly rough loss, in New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden no less, few would fault the dethroned champ for needing some time to lick her wounds.

But judging by Jedrzejczyk’s chat with reporters in Shanghai, where she’s currently fulfilling guest-fighter duties ahead of UFC Fight Night 122, it seems that won’t be necessary.

RelatedUFC 217 results: Rose Namajunas KOs Joanna Jedrzejczyk to win title in huge upset

“My life is better than before,” Jedrzejczyk said. “Some people, they can’t believe I’m smiling, I’m in good mood, and I’m looking forward. They think I should sleep and cry and do nothing. I do more. I’ve had more offers to work with big companies – the biggest companies everywhere than I had before.

“Because they see a human. At the end, they see a fighter. They see a professional athlete. I do my business from beginning to the end. And this is who I am. And I’m stronger.”

While Jedrzejczyk wasn’t exactly planning to come up short in her sixth attempt to defend the title she’d held since March 2015, she finds solace in a few things. The overwhelming support she’s received from her team, sponsors, her “real fans” and even the ex-minister of Poland – who was present at her fight – are among them.

The support, however, isn’t unanimous. While good-spirited and humorous in general, Jedrzejczyk has also been known to turn up the intimidation factor as fight time approaches. And, in the specific case of the recent title-costing bout, the Polish ex-champ’s jabs toward Namajunas’ mental state rubbed many the wrong way.

Add to that Namajunas’ post-fight vows to set a “good example” in MMA and the narrative pretty much writes itself.

RelatedNew champ Rose Namajunas 'sick of all the hate' in MMA, vows to set good example after UFC 217

But if you think the “accident” that took place at UFC 217 will translate to a change of attitude on Jedrzejczyk’s end, think again.

“People who are saying I was cocky or arrogant, this is why I lost,” Jedrzejczyk said. “I just want to tell you that I will be more cocky. I will be more arrogant. And I will be more loud. Because I know my value. I’m bigger than that night at UFC 217. Mistakes happen to everyone. And don’t you worry.

“But it was not a mistake. Because I didn’t do any mistakes. It was an accident. And people don’t know, I’m not going to blame it on anyone. Because I’m a classy lady. I’m a professional athlete. And I take this.”

Jedrzejczyk was ready for the title affair. Even two days before it, Jedrzejczyk says, she was in great shape – and she has her open workouts to show for it. But “something happened.” And while she won’t go into detail about it, she asks that people don’t place the blame of it on her team or in the UFC.

“It was not like a mental issue, or stress or pressure,” Jedrzejczyk said.

At the end of the day, Jedrzejczyk (14-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) gives “big respect” to Namajunas (7-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) for not only winning, but doing it in style. In fact, when it comes to all of the women she’s met in the octagon, Jedrzejczyk is clear in that she was never coming off a place of disrespect.

“When people say I don’t respect my opponents – I do respect them, more than 10 other fighters together,” Jedrzejczyk said. “Because I show that respect in how I work my ass hard every day in the gym. And that’s the thing. I never talk about their families. I never say bad things to my opponents.”

But, at the same time, the Polish strawweight believes that the belt she’s set on reclaiming is simply “on vacations” with the new champ.

“I’m still the champion,” Jedrzejczyk said. “I made this division. People texting me, ‘You’re not the strawweight queen anymore. You’re not Joanna champion.’ If you go the Olympics, you win the gold medal. If you flunk the Olympics four years after, you’re still a gold Olympic medalist.

“Same with the champion. I built this division. I defended my title five times. It means something.”

Now, after camp for UFC 217 and media duties, Jedrzejczyk is going to spend two months at home in her native Poland. She plans on returning to the U.S. for pre-camp in mid-January and also hinted at an exciting “big global thing” that she will be involved in, thought the former champion can’t yet give details.

When she returns to American Top Team, though, will Jedrzejczyk be preparing for a rematch?

“I’m clever, I don’t want a rematch,” Jedrzejczyk said. “What if (Namajunas) fights in February? What if she fights in March? What if she, for example, she will lose the belt? I will get the rematch. But like I said, I want my baby back. So I want to fight for the title. And this is what’s going to happen.”

UFC-Shanghai's Alex Caceres: 'It's not all about fighting – sometimes it's about cooking'

SHANGHAI – Put an interview with Alex Caceres in front of 100 people, and you can be reasonably certain at least half of them will walk away saying, “What a weird dude.”

But maybe the ones you should be focused on are the ones who would say, “Refreshing change of pace for a fighter … I like it.” Plus, ya know what? Caceres is the kind of cat who knows he’s probably a weird dude to some people – and the beauty is, he’s just fine with that.

For Caceres, his life doesn’t revolve around only the sport, even though he tends to be a martial arts purist who loves fighting in the truest sense of the word.

“It’s not all about fighting – sometimes it’s about cooking,” Caceres told MMAjunkie today in China. “But it’s always a battle. It’s always a process of self-discovery, of acquiring knowledge of self, and becoming a better person every single day. Nothing matters but today. Every day, you’re born again, and we just have to take advantage of it.”

RelatedUFC Fight Night 122 pre-event facts: How legendary is Michael Bisping? Just look at his resume

On Saturday, Caceres (13-10 MMA, 8-8 UFC) takes on the highly touted Wang Guan (16-1-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) in a featherweight bout at UFC Fight Night 122. Their fight on the main card takes place at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai. The entire card streams on UFC Fight Pass.

Caceres is the kind of fighter who marches to the beat of his own drum. When he fought Sergio Pettis at UFC on FOX 10 in Chicago nearly four years ago, his walkout song was well off the beaten path: “One-Trick Pony” by Paul Simon, a seldom remembered Simon album and almost certainly a song that had never been used before for an MMA walkout.

For Caceres, it’s more about having life experiences through reading, through traveling, through the aforementioned cooking, if needs be. And yes, fighting is a big part of it.

“I love fighting,” he said. “It’s not fighting for the UFC, it’s not MMA – I just like fighting people. I don’t get angry when I fight – everybody sees that. I enjoy fighting. Some people call it me being a violent person. I don’t think I’m a violent person – I just enjoy the scrap. I like getting in people’s faces.

“I feel like it’s a process of self-discovery. … I’m really fighting against myself to see where I stand, and hopefully in the future I will have already fought myself so many times that I finally understood myself through the mirror image of other people and I won’t be fighting anymore. I’ll be able to teach people and help people discovery themselves as well through the beauty of martial arts.”

At 29, and with 17 fights already on his UFC resume (eight up, eight down, and a no-contest), Caceres says there’s really no telling what the future holds.

“I’m still very young. I keep getting older, but I just don’t get older in a sense.”

If that’s not existential enough, check out the video above for more from Caceres.

Listen to GLORY champ's Tiffany Van Soest's spoken word poetry on anxiety

MMA Junkie News -

GLORY kickboxing champion and Invicta FC fighter Tiffany Van Soest has passions outside combat sports. One of those includes reciting poetry.

Van Soest (18-2-1 boxing, 1-2 MMA), who next competes at GLORY 48 in New York City on Dec. 1 when she puts her super bantamweight title on the line against Anissa Meksen, posted a video online with some of her surprising poetry work.

“Time Bomb” is not only a fighter in the ring and cage, but she’s also a fighter against the stigma of anxiety. That’s what her poetry is all about.

An inside look at UFC champ Max Holloway's meal plan ahead of UFC 218

MMA Junkie News -

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway appears to be well fed going into his first scheduled title defense against Jose Aldo at UFC 218.

Holloway (18-3 MMA, 14-3 UFC), who rematches Aldo (26-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) in the Dec. 2 pay-per-view headliner at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass, is working closely with noted nutritionist Tyler “Melee” Minton as he looks to extend his winning streak to 12 fights.

“Blessed” is among the largest featherweights in the UFC, but the Hawaiian has never missed weight during his career. What kind of diet does he maintain to get it done? Minton has shared posts of Holloway’s meal plan throughout the course of UFC 218 fight camp, which can be seen below (via Instagram):

Why 'big-game hunter' Frank Mir wanted Fedor Emelianenko in Bellator grand prix

MMA Junkie News -

Even before he officially got the matchup, Frank Mir knew he wanted a fight with Fedor Emelianenko.

The way Mir, a former UFC heavyweight champion, sees it, former longtime PRIDE titleholder Emelianenko is the biggest name in the eight-man field of the Bellator MMA World Grand Prix 2018.

MMAjunkie first reported plans for the multi-event tournament, which kicks off in January, this past week. And on Wednesday, officials formally confirmed the opening-round pairings, which include Emelianenko (36-5 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) vs. Mir (18-11 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) in the same bracket as Quinton Jackson (37-12 MMA, 4-1 BMMA) vs. Chael Sonnen (29-15-1 MMA, 1-1 BMMA).

RelatedBellator heavyweight grand prix opening-round matchups set; 'Rampage'-Sonnen first up Jan. 20

Mir vs. Emelianenko is tentatively slotted for April.

“It’s like being a big-game hunter,” Mir, 38, told MMAjunkie Radio prior to the unveiling of the opening-round pairing. “I don’t want to go out there and shoot a little quail. You want to take out the biggest and the baddest.”

Mir will make his promotional debut as part of the fight with Emelianenko. The longtime UFC heavyweight was granted his release from the promotion in July while serving a suspension for a failed drug test (he’s denied taking any performance-enhancing drugs).

During his time off, Mir has kept busy with his podcast, “Phone Booth Fighting” (with Richard Hunter), and commentating duties for the Absolute Championship Berkut (ACB) promotion.

“I’ve seen so much more now, because I’ve watched so many countless hours of video of two guys fighting, actually breaking it down analytically.” said Mir, who suffered losses to Andrei Arlovski and Mark Hunt in the final of 27 career UFC fights (one shy of Michael Bisping’s current record). ” … My mind has advanced even more so.”

RelatedFrank Mir is leaving behind an incredible UFC legacy with all these records

As for the possibility of fighting three times to claim the Bellator grand-prix crown and the vacant heavyweight belt, Mir, who hasn’t been in the cage since March 2016, said he likes having a fight schedule again.

“It’s nice to be a fighter again,” he said. “A little bit of limbo was the last year-and-a-half, not having a fight scheduled and not being able to participate. I finally get to fight again. It’s something that, when you don’t get to do what you love, it makes it even worse.”

“Meus alunos acharam o gesto representativo.

Comente conosco!

Jessica-Rose Clark says she's fighting Paige VanZant at UFC Fight Night 124 in St. Louis

MMA Junkie News -

In the span of a few short weeks, Jessica-Rose Clark has gone from making her UFC debut on short notice to being lined up for a fight with one of the organization’s biggest stars.

Clark (8-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who debuted in the octagon with a split-decision win over Bec Rawlings at UFC Fight Night 121 this past weekend, revealed on social media that she’s lined up to fight Paige VanZant (7-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) at January’s UFC Fight Night 124 event.

Her announcement follows initial reports from ESPN.com and MMAFighting.com (via Instagram):

UFC Fight Night 124 takes place Jan. 14 at Scottrade Center in St. Louis. It airs on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass, though the full fight card and bout order haven’t been finalized.

Clark accepted the UFC Fight Night 121 matchup with Rawlings on short notice after Joanne Calderwood was forced to withdraw due to injury. She missed weight by two pounds for the UFC’s newly created women’s flyweight division, but the 29-year-old Australian managed to get the narrow win over Rawlings on the scorecards.

Following the fight, Clark said she already feels near title contention and hoped for a full training camp for her sophomore octagon appearance. She’ll get that, and more.

VanZant hasn’t competed since a first-round submission loss to Michelle Waterson at UFC on FOX 22 in December 2016. After some time off, “12 Gauge” announced her intention to move up to the 125-pound division from strawweight, and she was booked for a clash with Jessica Eye at UFC 216 in October. However, the 23-year-old was forced to pull from the card due to a back injury. She’s already returned to training, though, and will debut in the weight class against Clark.

The latest UFC Fight Night 124 card now includes:

  • Vitor Belfort vs. Uriah Hall
  • Jessica Eye vs. Kalindra Faria
  • Irene Aldana vs. Talita Oliveira
  • Matt Frevola vs. Marco Polo Reyes
  • James Krause vs. Alex White
  • Thiago Alves vs. Zak Cummings
  • Darren Elkins vs. Michael Johnson
  • Jessica-Rose Clark vs. Paige VanZant

Actual question: How are you such a handsome man, Michael Bisping?

SHANGHAI – Michael Bisping appears to be a hit in China – among some Chinese women, anyway.

During an open workout and Q&A today ahead of Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 122 event, headliner Bisping (30-8 MMA, 20-8 UFC) answered a range of questions. They included queries about last-minute fight bookings, the former middleweight champion’s strategy for fellow middleweight Kelvin Gastelum (13-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC), and why he doesn’t take his upcoming opponent seriously.

But Bisping, whose bout streams Saturday on UFC Fight Pass from Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai, then got a question he couldn’t wait to answer.

RelatedUFC-Shanghai headliner Kelvin Gastelum talks 'badass' Bisping, why he wants Woodley rematch

“(My friend) has a neighbor who is a girl, and she loves you very much because you are very handsome,” one attendee told Bisping. “How do you make yourself to be such a handsome man but also a very good fighter?”

An obviously flattered Bisping smiled, ripped off his shirt and then puffed out his chest.

“I guess I hit the lottery – what can I say?” he said with a laugh.

Check out the full exchange above.

Another day, another boxer calling out UFC champ Conor McGregor

MMA Junkie News -

It seems a notable boxer is stumping for a fight with Conor McGregor nearly everyday – even the holidays.

The latest? Manny Pacquiao today posted a not-so-cryptic Instagram post directed at the UFC lightweight champion.

Granted, neither fighter is American, so U.S. Thanksgiving may not mean a whole lot to either one of them. Still, it didn’t stop Pacquiao (59-7-2), a 38-year-old former eight-division boxing champion and current Filipono politician, from wishing McGregor a happy holiday.

However, the post also included “#realboxingmatch #2018” and the suggestion to “Stay fit my friend” (via Instagram):

Pacquiao announced a short-lived retirement in 2016 but returned in July for a decision loss to Jeff Horn.

McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC, 0-1 boxing) is coming off his boxing pro debut in August, when he suffered a 10th-round TKO defeat to Floyd Mayweather. However, McGregor, who hasn’t been booked for a return to the UFC octagon, likely made a nine-figure payday for the PPV blockbuster.

It’s led to callouts from fighters in all corners of the combat-sports world, including a recent one from Oscar De La Hoya (39-6), an Olympic gold medalist who later became one of boxing’s big stars before his 2008 retirement.

Jorge Masvidal is in Shanghai, ready to fight Michael Bisping on Saturday (or in London)

SHANGHAI – If Michael Bisping wants a fight, Jorge Masvidal will give him one – now, on Saturday, in his retirement fight, or whenever.

Masvidal wasn’t initially jazzed about a nearly daylong flight to China, but when the UFC headed to Shanghai – with late replacement Bisping in the headliner – “Gamebred” couldn’t say no.

After all, there’s an ever-so-slight chance it could lead to an actual fight with Bisping – in the octagon, anyway, if Kelvin Gastelum (13-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) is forced out of the UFC Fight Night 122 headliner against Bisping (30-8 MMA, 20-8 UFC)

“Yeah, I would go up in a heartbeat,” Masvidal (32-13 MMA, 9-6 UFC), who’s No. 12 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA welterweight rankings, today said. “I didn’t want to be on a long flight, but when I heard Bisping was taking the fight, I said, ‘For sure take me to China just in case Gastelum does’t make over there.’

“But I don’t like the dude, so I’ll fight him at any weight class, any weight – doesn’t matter.”

During UFC 217 fight week earlier this month, Masvidal and Bisping had a few well-documented run-ins following a seemingly innocent Twitter beef. But tempers flared when the vets crossed paths in real life, and it’s apparently arrived in Shanghai, which hosts Saturday’s UFC Fight Pass-streamed UFC Fight Night 122 event at Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Masvidal, who’s in China as a guest fighter for public-relations and fan events, crossed paths with former middleweight champ Bisping, who recently replaced Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 122, on his way to a fighter Q&A event.

“Actually, just as I was heading over here, I saw him – f*cking what’s his face,” Masvidal said of Bisping. “But I can’t stand the dude.

“He started saying, ‘shame, shame, shame.’ And he’s with his wife or his kids, or some type of girls are with him. I don’t want to make a scene in front of them, but he’s just a coward. As long as (media events are) happening, he’s going to talk, and he’s going to do sh*t. But if it’s just me and him, and we go somewhere to talk, he’s not going to do that.”

Masvidal, who previously competed at lightweight before a somewhat permanent move to welterweight in 2015, said he’s willing to move up another weight class for a fight with Bisping. So far, it looks like Gastelum, who’s struggled with past weight cuts, is good to go for Saturday. That means a late-notice slot for Masvidal is looking less and less likely. However, if Bisping is game and still wants to retire after UFC Fight Night 127, which takes place in March 2018 in “The Count’s” native England, Masvidal is willing to be his final opponent.

“I already made it clear: I’ll fight that guy anywhere, bro,” he said. “I’m not going to say I’d do it for free because then the UFC might not pay me, but I’d fight him anywhere.

“For him, it’s whatever, whenever. I dislike the guy genuinely.”
