Dana White: Mayweather-McGregor is tracking to 'kill' 4.9 million pay-per-view buys

http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid4621179066001?bckey=AQ~~,AAAABvaL8JE~,ufBHq_I6FnxR-PQW_F3sm5QdUbP7D6E9&bctid=5542969495001

UFC President Dana White believes “The Money Fight” is on track to beat the Las Vegas odds on how many people will purchase the pay-per-view.

With the over-under set at 4.9 million buys, White said “everything is tracking right now to say that we’re going to kill this thing” when Floyd Mayweather (49-0 boxing) squares off with Conor McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) on Aug. 26 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

White said technological advances will give the event a leg up in distribution, which will give it a better chance to generate more revenue. He claimed the boxing card will be the most widely distributed fight ever, from Internet sources to television, where the fight will be available in one billion homes worldwide.

“There’s a lot of things boxing doesn’t do,” White said Wednesday during a conference call. “For instance, most of the time, you’re dealing with a network. Networks aren’t too excited to go OTT. It’s not a big thing they’re into. We have the capabilities, we do it all the time, and I believe we’re one of the best to do it. The numbers are tracking huge. We’re going to do the numbers that everybody has been talking we’re going to do.”

RelatedLet's talk about how Mayweather vs. McGregor could generate $1 billion (with a 'B') in total sales

A buy-rate over 4.9 million would shatter the record set by Floyd Mayweather’s 2015 fight against Manny Pacquiao in “The Fight of the Century,” which generated 4.4 million buys and over $400 million in revenue.

Mayweather on Tuesday predicted his boxing match with the UFC lightweight champion would net him $350 million. White wouldn’t say how much McGregor would take home, simply saying the Irish champ would make “life-changing money.”

RelatedConor McGregor's 10 most memorable in-the-cage moments

Although boxing and MMA observers have widely dismissed McGregor’s chances against Mayweather, interest in the bout has been intense. White said video of McGregor sparring retired boxer Paulie Malignaggi generated 1 million views on his Instagram account, while his Facebook and Twitter accounts drew 2 million apiece.

“That doesn’t include everywhere else it went,” White said.

White and the fight’s promoters at Mayweather Promotions hope that curiosity translates to purchases. If it does, an obscene amount of money could be made.

It looks like the UFC’s return to the “Land Down Under” has a new welterweight fight for the card.

Belal Muhammad (12-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) announced on his Instagram feed today that he’ll be fighting recent “TUF 25” winner Jesse Taylor (31-15 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 121 in November in Australia. UFC officials have not yet made a formal announcement of the booking.

UFC Fight Night 121 takes place Nov. 19 (but airs in the U.S. on Nov. 18 due to the time difference) at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. It’s expected to air on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.

Muhammad has won back-to-back fights and three of his past four. He’s been busy since coming to the promotion for his debut at UFC Fight Night 90 in July 2016, just 13 months ago. Although he lost a decision to Alan Jouban that night, he picked up a “Fight of the Night” bonus.

Since then, he has a TKO win over Augusto Montano at UFC Fight Night 94 in Texas, and now consecutive decision wins over Randy Brown and Jordan Mein to get him back on track after a knockout loss to Vicente Luque at UFC 205 this past November at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Taylor completed one of the most memorable long-term comebacks in UFC history in July when he submitted Dhiego Lima in the second round to win Season 25 of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Taylor was a finalist on Season 7 of the show, but a drunken meltdown caught on camera forced UFC President Dana White to remove him from the final against eventual winner Amir Sadollah, and he was replaced by C.B. Dollaway.

Taylor had one fight in the UFC in 2008, a loss to Dollaway, then was forced to ply his trade for many other promotions around the country and world, including Strikeforce, WSOF, Cage Warriors and DREAM. But the “redemption” season of “TUF” was his chance to get back, and he took advantage of it after going nine years between official UFC fights.

With the apparent addition to the card, UFC Fight Night 121 now includes:

  • Mark Hunt vs. Marcin Tybura
  • Rashad Coulter vs. Tai Tuivasa
  • Ryan Benoit vs. Ashkan Mokhtarian
  • Belal Muhammad vs. Jesse Taylor

Holly Holm? Cat Zingano? Another challenger? UFC champ Cris Cyborg wonders who's next

http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid4621179066001?bckey=AQ~~,AAAABvaL8JE~,ufBHq_I6FnxR-PQW_F3sm5QdUbP7D6E9&bctid=5543042865001

RIO DE JANEIRO – After a tumultuous start, longtime pound-for-pound force Cris Cyborg finally has a UFC title belt – most importantly, one in her own weight division.

However, she had barely cooled off from her title-winning third-round TKO over Tonya Evinger at UFC 214 before the question was asked once more: What’s next for the world’s most dominant female 145-pound fighter? Or, more specifically, who could be next in a division that’s been surrounded by uncertainty from the start?

Cyborg can’t answer that question yet. What she can answer, though, is what she wants to happen. And, as she’s made clear before, that’s a fight with former 135-pound titleholder – and one of the two original 145-pound title challengers – Holly Holm.

The main reason, Cyborg explains, is pretty simple.

RelatedCris 'Cyborg' explains taking high road during Joe Rogan interview after UFC title win

“I think it would be a great fight for the fans,” Justino said during a media day in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday. “It’d be an exciting fight. Because Holly Holm is a great striker, and I like to strike. And then for sure somebody’s going to be KO’d.”

Stylistically, she has a point.

While Cyborg’s powerful muay Thai has become her trademark throughout her overwhelmingly victorious career, Holm (11-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC), is a well accomplished boxer in the past. Not only that, Holm has used a smart kickboxing game to pick up a pair of UFC knockouts – including the major title-winning victory over Ronda Rousey.

But when it comes to whether Holm actually deserves a title shot, things get more complicated. After all, while the ex-135-champ is coming off a win, a TKO over Bethe Correia at UFC Fight Night 111, she was on a three-fight losing skid before that. And that includes a failed 145-pound title bid.

Cyborg (18-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) can kind of see why a title fight makes sense.

RelatedCoach: 'No doubt' Holly Holm can pick apart and beat UFC champ Cris 'Cyborg'

“When she fought the first time, she already didn’t deserve to fight for the belt,” Cyborg said. “When she fought (Germaine) de Randamie, I don’t think both deserved to fight for the belt. De Randamie hadn’t fought at 145 for a long time. I think last time was at Strikeforce, a long time ago.

“And then Holly, she came off (two) losses in a row to fight for the belt. But I talk about her because I think she’s the biggest girl at 135. And then she fought already at 145. And maybe this fight could happen.”

At the end of the day, in a weight class that at this point holds basically only herself, it’s not like Justino has a lot of options. The women’s featherweight division’s inaugural champion, de Randamie, was even stripped of her title exactly because she refused to face Cyborg after beating Holm at UFC 208.

Invicta FC’s most recent 145-pound champ, Megan Anderson, had to pull out of a scheduled bout with Cyborg due to personal issues that haven’t been disclosed. Evinger herself is a 135-pound fighter, who left Invicta FC’s bantamweight belt behind to take the UFC 214 call on short notice.

RelatedCat Zingano angling for title fight with new UFC champ Cristiane 'Cyborg'

While Cyborg is diplomatic, she admits she’s not exactly excited about the lack of options in her division.

“It bothers me,” Cyborg said in her native Portuguese. “I wish the UFC would sign girls in my division. I didn’t want to fight 135-ers. I talk about Holly because she’s one of the bigger ones in the division, and she’s fought at 145 against de Randamie. And I think she could take the fight.

“But I’d like to fight girls in my division. I believe there are many girls. They’re signed under other promotions, but I believe that, if there were more opportunities in the division, I’d think for sure they’d want to migrate. The UFC is a great (promotion) and for sure there’ll be more opportunities.”

While that doesn’t happen, Cyborg says she’s already going into camp to prepare for her next challenge. Other than Holm, she sees possibilities in Anderson (9-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC), who she believes rankings-wise makes sense – and Cat Zingano (9-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC), who the Brazilian says won’t be medically cleared to fight until 2018.

RelatedCris 'Cyborg': Holly Holm, Cat Zingano made mistake by not fighting me sooner at 140

“Maybe it can be Megan Anderson, but Megan has to fix her problems for the fight to happen,” Cyborg said. “Can be her, too. I’m going to Thailand to focus on training (for a) southpaw and get started on the camp. People say maybe Cat Zingano – Cat Zingano is a southpaw, too.

“So, we started the plan already for both girls. If it changes, we change the game. But we already started camp for that fight.”

Zingano, of course, also originally belongs to the 135-pound division – where she’s had one failed title bid against Rousey. And, as Cyborg has pointed out, she hasn’t won a UFC fight since 2014. But, with the two already at odds on social media, perhaps the very interest she’s shown in meeting Cyborg could end up paying off.

RelatedTito Ortiz: 'Cyborg' should've been face of women's MMA long before 'flash in the pan' Ronda Rousey

When it comes to her main target, however, Cyborg says the ball is pretty much in Holm’s court. And she believes the former champion may very well be waiting for the 135-pound title rematch between champ Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko – set for Sept. 9 at UFC 215 – to unfold before making her next move.

“I think that maybe makes (our) fight harder to happen, because she’s close to the belt,” Justino said. “Maybe if she wins and fights for the belt, she’s interested in fighting me. I think it will be a cool fight for the fans, but it’s up to her whether she wants to make it happen.”

If the fight does end up coming to fruition, Justino doesn’t seem particularly intimidated by what her possible foe might have to offer.

“I think Holly doesn’t have knockout power,” Justino said. “All her fights, she knocks them out with kicks – not punches. I don’t think she’s very aggressive. I don’t think she’s going to be really dangerous. I think it will be an exciting fight, because I like to fight. And, of course, I’m going to find her. She’s going to run in the ring, but I’m going to find her.”

For the first time, Bellator will touch down at Penn State University this fall, and the light heavyweight title will be on the line.

Newly crowned champ Ryan Bader (23-5 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) will put his 205-pound belt up against Linton Vassell (18-5 MMA, 7-2 BMMA) in the Bellator 186 main event, promotion officials confirmed to PennLive.com‘s Brian Linder. Also on the card will be a pair of Penn State wrestling alums, former champ Phil Davis (17-4 MMA, 4-1 BMMA) and Ed Ruth (3-0 MMA, 3-0 BMMA), though their opponents will be announced later.

Bellator 186 will take place Nov. 3 at Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State’s campus in University Park, Pa. The main card will air on Spike following prelims on MMAjunkie.

Bryce Jordan Center, which opened in 1996, can seat upwards of 16,000 people, depending on its configuration. It is the home of Penn State’s basketball teams and regularly hosts top-shelf musical acts, as well, including Pearl Jam, Aerosmith and Garth Brooks.

Bader made his promotional debut in June in the main event of the Bellator 180 portion of Bellator NYC at Madison Square Garden in New York. In a split decision, he took the light heavyweight title from Davis in a rematch from when they previously met under the UFC banner in 2015 – when he also won a split call.

The win was Bader’s third straight and eighth in nine outings. Seven of those eight came for the UFC, the promotion he spent the bulk of his career fighting for, and where he won Season 8 of “The Ultimate Fighter.” But earlier this year, he left the promotion as a free agent, signed with Bellator, promptly got a title shot, and took home the belt.

Linton Vassell

England’s Vassell now gets the title shot he has been asking for. He brings three straight wins into the fight, including a third-round submission of ex-champ Liam McGeary at Bellator 179 in May in London. Prior to that, he avanged a loss to Emanuel Newton with a unanimous decision at Bellator 149 and outpointed Francis Carmont at Bellator 165, both in 2016.

Phil Davis

Davis, a Pennsylvania native, won a national wrestling title at 197 pounds for the Nittany Lions in 2008. He finished his college career with a 116-15 mark on the mats and was a four-time D-I All-American. He’ll attempt to get back in the win column after losing his light heavyweight title to Bader, which snapped a perfect 4-0 start to his Bellator tenure after coming to the promotion after years with the UFC.

Ed Ruth

Ruth was a three-time national champion for Penn State in 2012, 2013 and 2014, and a four-time D-I All-American. In May 2015, he signed with Bellator – though he also announced his intention to focus on the 2016 Summer Olympics before wading into the MMA waters. When he failed to make the U.S. team, he turned his attention to MMA and made his promotional and pro debut at Bellator 163, where he picked up a first-round TKO of Dustin Collins-Miles. At Bellator 168, he stopped Emanuele Palombi in the first round. And at Bellator 178 in April, he stopped David Mundell in the second after a knee to the body.

It appears a former light heavyweight champion will return to headline the UFC’s card in Brazil in October.

According to a report from Combate, former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida (22-7 MMA, 14-7 UFC) will return from a suspension to take on Derek Brunson (17-5 MMA, 8-3 UFC) in a middleweight bout at UFC Fight Night 119 in Sao Paulo. UFC officials have not yet made a formal announcement of the booking.

UFC Fight Night 119 takes place Oct. 28 at Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo. The event airs on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass. Already set for the card is a light heavyweight bout between Misha Cirkunov and former title challenger Glover Teixeira.

It’s been more than two years since Machida last fought. The former 205-pound champion, who lost that belt more than seven years ago, has dropped three of his past four fights. He’s 3-3 since his move from light heavyweight to middleweight in October 2013.

After starting his 185-pound tenure with a knockout win over Mark Munoz and a “Fight of the Night” decision win over Gegard Mousasi, he got a title shot against then-champ Chris Weidman, but lost a decision. He rebounded with a 62-second bonus-winning TKO of C.B. Dollaway in December 2014, but then was submitted by Luke Rockhold in April 2015 on Rockhold’s path to the middleweight belt.

In June 2015, he was knocked out by Yoel Romero in the third round of the UFC Fight Nighit 70 main event. After that, he was booked for a fight with Dan Henderson at UFC on FOX 19, but when he declared the use of a banned substance, he was pulled from the card. Ultimately, he received an 18-month suspension from USADA. His return in October will be just three weeks after he becomes eligible to fight again. The bout will be his seventh consecutive UFC main event.

Derek Brunson

Brunson got back in the win column in June at UFC Fight Night 110 in New Zealand when he knocked out Dan Kelly in 76 seconds. That snapped a two-fight skid that saw him knocked out by Robert Whittaker in the UFC Fight Night 101 main event this past November, then lose a decision to Anderson Silva at UFC 208 in February.

Prior to those losses, Brunson had won seven of his first eight fights in the UFC and was on a five-fight winning streak, including four consecutive knockouts of Ed Herman, Sam Alvey, Roan Carneiro and Uriah Hall.

Anderson Silva vs. Kelvin Gastelum official for UFC's Shanghai debut main event

A fight that was supposed to happen a couple times already now is official to headline the UFC’s visit to Shanghai this fall.

Former UFC middleweight champion and all-time great Anderson Silva (34-8 MMA, 17-4 UFC) will take on Kelvin Gastelum (14-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC) in the headliner of the UFC’s debut in mainland China, set to take place at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai on Nov. 25. UFC officials confirmed the previously reported fight overnight.

Kelvin Gastelum

The pair originally was set to meet at UFC 212 in Rio de Janeiro, but Gastelum had to be pulled from the bout after testing positive for marijuana metabolites in a test stemming from a previous bout with Vitor Belfort. A suitable replacement couldn’t be found for Silva, who ended up off the card altogether.

Gastelum then suggested a meeting in Long Island, New York, at UFC on FOX 25 less than a month ago. Gastelum got a spot on the show, but fought another ex-champ – Chris Weidman. Gastelum suffered a third-round submission, which was his first loss since a split-decision setback to Neil Magny in 2015.

The fight will be Silva’s first appearance since February, when a close decision win over Derek Brunson at UFC 208 snapped a four-fight losing skid. Silva had a decision victory over Nick Diaz at UFC 183 later overturned after both fighters failed doping tests, and his two fights before that were title-fight losses to Chris Weidman. His win over Brunson was his first victory since October 2012 against Stephan Bonnar.

Before his title-costing loss to Weidman, however, the record-breaking former champion was on a 17-fight victorious run. Silva still is widely considered one of the best to ever grace the cage.

Why ex-Conor McGregor sparring partner Chris van Heerden feels bad for Paulie Malignaggi

http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid4621179066001?bckey=AQ~~,AAAABvaL8JE~,ufBHq_I6FnxR-PQW_F3sm5QdUbP7D6E9&bctid=5540939693001

When the whole Conor McGregor vs. Paulie Malignaggi situation erupted, one man was hit with a sense of deja vu.

That’s former IBO and IBF welterweight champion Chris van Heerden, who had a similar experience with the UFC’s lightweight champion last summer. Unlike Malignaggi, who was hired to help McGregor prepare for a boxing showdown with undefeated Floyd Mayweather, van Heerden volunteered to help the Irishman for his UFC 202 rematch with Nate Diaz.

What happened after that, though, is quite similar. Like Malignaggi, who’s been making the rounds in the media after unflattering footage of his training sessions with the McGregor were released, van Heerden had videos of an encounter with McGregor made public. And he also wasn’t happy with his portrayal.

RelatedDana White: 'Nothing against' Paulie Malignaggi, though Showtime turned down offer of sparring footage (updated)

Van Heerden has spoken with MMAjunkie before about the situation (the account can be read in detail here). More recently he basically has seen a re-run of his own debacle unfold between McGregor and Malignaggi, who spoke with van Heerden before joining camp. While his fellow pro boxer seemed to immediately take a pro-Conor route, van Heerden says he wasn’t particularly surprised when things took a bad turn..

“It was like, ‘You know, guys, you’re all going to be surprised – Conor is not bad,'” van Heerden told MMAjunkie Radio. “And I thought, ‘You know what, these guys are buddy-buddying. And good for them.’ But deep down, I was expecting something to come out eventually. And it did. And I was like, ‘Exactly what he did to you guys, is what he did to me.’ And I was called a snake. But the only difference is I had footage. Paulie doesn’t.”

RelatedIf Conor McGregor hangs with Floyd Mayweather, Paulie Malignaggi would consider fight

After images he says he never agreed to be make public ended up on TMZ and “The Mac Life,” van Heerden released his own video – shot unbeknownst to McGregor’s camp. Van Heerden caught some heat for it. But after the perceived back-stabbing, he was grateful for his decision to get his own recording of the sparring session out there.

Van Heerden is not at all happy about what’s been done to Malignaggi – who he likes and thinks deserved more respect.  But throughout the ordeal, he got some vindication of his own.

“A big part of me – and this is going to sound ugly – but a big part of me was relieved,” van Heerden said. “Because I was like, ‘I’m not the bad guy in this. I’m not the bad guy in this.’ This guy is just showing his true colors. He’s done it again.

“But this time, I hope that people can open their eyes. This big Conor McGregor guy that’s so blown up. That they can see that, hey, Conor is actually – he’s in it for himself. And he’s going to do whatever he’s got to do to sell this fight and make himself look good. And he doesn’t care about anyone.”

RelatedDana White: Conor McGregor gave Paulie Malignaggi '1-way beating' for 12 rounds

The whole situation doesn’t change van Heerden’s appreciation for McGregor’s (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) skills as an MMA fighter. In fact, he’ll be the first to say McGregor was nothing but cordial and gentlemanly in their personal interactions. After what he saw first-hand, however, van Heerden is not that generous when it comes to the chances he’s giving McGregor to do well against Mayweather (49-0 boxing).

But we’ll get to that in a minute.

First, the good news.

“Conor is a good boxer for an MMA fighter,” van Heerden said. “What was surprising for me was, the good thing about him was the same as in the UFC: his counterpunch. Straight left. (It’s) beautiful. His precision, his timing. If you’re lazy, if you throw a lazy punch at him, he’s going to make you pay.

RelatedBoxing coach to Conor McGregor: Don't lie about Paulie Malignaggi being 'badly concussed'

“I’m going to be honest. We sparred, not throwing anything with bad intentions, and being a little bit lazy. He countered me, and he caught me. I was like, ‘OK, good man. Now I know what he’s up about.’ His timing, his precision is very good. He can fight. He’s a fighter. He knows how to fight.”

As for the bad news?

“His footwork is all over the place,” van Heerden said. “He’s dropping his hands, and he’s putting his chin out there. Stuff like that. Pretty bad. He doesn’t throw in combinations. That’s the big thing that MMA fighters lack. And that’s the upside of boxing.

RelatedPaulie Malignaggi: 'Cute and adorable' Conor McGregor sparring videos distract from truth

“When I wanted to put Conor on is back foot, it was too easy. It was really too easy. And Conor is bigger than me. Believe it or not, I was surprised at the size of Conor, him being that big, how easily I could put him on his backfoot. Because I knew my footwork was in place, and his wasn’t.”

If van Heerden were to give McGregor any advice to avoid being embarrassed, it’s pretty simple: whatever he’s learned in boxing, throw it out the window. Make it as wild and ugly as possible, and make damn sure Mayweather is uncomfortable the second they step into the ring.

“Conor is going to forget everything he learned about boxing the moment he gets touched up,” van Heerden said. “The moment he gets hit, he’s going to drop his hands. He’s going to go right back into his MMA style, and he’s going to completely forget about boxing. Mark my words.”

Conor McGregor’s head striking coach, Owen Roddy, has had a tradition of releasing a video blog series in the lead up to his pupil’s most recent fights.

With the entire team in Las Vegas to help “The Notorious” finish the remaining days of camp for Floyd Mayweather, there’s some footage Roddy was able to capture that’s unlikely to be seen elsewhere.

In the latest episode, Roddy and teammates cruise Las Vegas, attend open workouts at the UFC Performance Institute and more ahead of the Aug. 26 pay-per-view event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Bisping-GSP, Garbrandt-Dillashaw title fights among 7 official for UFC 217

Two championship belts will be on the line when the UFC makes its second visit this November to the famous Madison Square Garden in New York.

In the main event of the Nov. 4 pay-per-view lineup (which follows prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass), Michael Bisping (30-7 MMA, 20-7 UFC) will defend the UFC middleweight championship against Georges St-Pierre (25-2 MMA, 19-2 UFC). Bantamweight titleholder Cody Garbrandt (11-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) takes on rival T.J. Dillashaw (14-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) in the co-headliner.

Both title bouts were confirmed on Tuesday’s episode of “UFC Tonight” on FS1.

RelatedGeorges St-Pierre officially signs agreement to fight Michael Bisping at UFC 217

The matchup between Bisping and St-Pierre has been an on-again, off-again mess after it was announced in March that former UFC welterweight champion St-Pierre would end his nearly 4-year hiatus to fight Bisping, despite never having competed at 185 pounds.

St-Pierre hasn’t fought since 2013, when he notched his ninth consecutive welterweight title defense with a split-decision victory over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167. St-Pierre then vacated the title and took a break from competition. After St-Pierre recently flirted with a return, UFC officials announced earlier this year that the 36-year-old Canadian MMA great would fight Bisping sometime later in the year.

However, St-Pierre then said he could not fight until at least November due to outside commitments, and an irked UFC President Dana White later said the fight was off. Bisping was then slated to fight top contender Yoel Romero.

RelatedUFC 217 opening odds: Who's the favorite – champ Michael Bisping or Georges St-Pierre?

But when Bisping subsequently revealed a knee injury (while St-Pierre declared a lingering eye issue), Plan B for Bisping-Romero also was scrapped. Romero (12-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC) then lost a decision to fellow contender Robert Whittaker (19-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) for an interim title earlier this month at UFC 213.

White suggested a knee injury recently suffered by Whittaker opened the door for St-Pierre to cut the line.

With Whittaker the challenger in waiting, White said in July that St-Pierre would instead fight the winner of this past Saturday’s UFC 214 co-headliner between current welterweight champ Tyron Woodley (18-3-1 MMA, 8-2-1 UFC) and challenger Demian Maia (25-7 MMA, 19-7 UFC). However, with Woodley’s heavily panned unanimous-decision win over Maia, that apparently opened the door for St-Pierre vs. Bisping once again.

RelatedT.J. Dillashaw: 'Fingers crossed nothing happens' to stop UFC 217 title fight vs. Cody Garbrandt

Garbrandt and Dillashaw have a tenuous history after being teammates for several years at Team Alpha Male in Sacramento, Calif. Dillashaw unceremoniously left the gym to train with striking coach Duane Ludwig in Colorado, and the disdain with former teammates such as Garbrandt and Urijah Faber has grown thicker ever since.

The feud grew deeper when the pair served as opposing coaches on Season 25 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series. Dillashaw handled Garbrandt in the coaching aspect, seeing a greater number of his fighters advance through the tournament, with Jesse Taylor ultimately winning the tournament crown.

Garbrandt was forced to withdraw from their planned UFC 213 bout in July due to a back injury that required treatment. He’s been rehabbing since and is ready to go for UFC 217.

Conor McGregor '100 percent' still considers himself both UFC lightweight, featherweight champ

Conor McGregor’s message to the UFC is still “you’re fooling nobody.”

Although the UFC lightweight champion hasn’t appeared in the octagon since last November and has never defended either of the two tiles he’s won, McGregor said he “100 percent” considers himself the champion of both divisions.

“I mean, how can I not consider myself the UFC featherweight world champion and the UFC lightweight world champion?” McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) said Wednesday during a conference call promoting his foray into boxing against Floyd Mayweather (49-0 boxing) on Aug. 26 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

RelatedConor McGregor feels 'discarded' by boxing community, reacts to 'McGregor Challenge' mockery

When it comes to his status in the UFC, McGregor’s reasoning is simple: He owns the 155-pound title and has beat the guy holding the 145-pound belt.

“The current UFC (featherweight) champion is Max Holloway, a man I dismantled. And the former was Jose Aldo. I still reign supreme over that division. And then also the 155-pound division. I know there’s talk of an interim belt. I won that belt and literally one month later there was an interim scheduled.

“But it is what it is. Everyone knows I am the multiple world champion of the UFC featherweight division and lightweight division. I look forward to coming back and continuing where I left off.”

RelatedConor McGregor's 10 most memorable in-the-cage moments

As McGregor’s boxing conquest draws nearer, the UFC plans to crown a new interim lightweight champion after an ill-fated attempt earlier this year. Tony Ferguson will get his second shot at gold when he faces Kevin Lee at UFC 216, which takes place Oct. 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Ferguson was scheduled to fight for the interim belt in March at UFC 209, but opponent Khabib Nurmagomedov was forced to withdraw the day before after being hospitalized due to a bad weight cut. Ferguson and Nurmagomedov both have tried to talk their way into a fight with McGregor, no doubt seeking the lightweight title and a lucrative payout with the UFC’s biggest draw.

RelatedConor McGregor's uncanny ability to will things into existence is why he's fighting Floyd Mayweather

McGregor is expected to take home at least $75 million for his boxing match with Mayweather, who on Tuesday said he’ll make a staggering $350 million if the event sells as planned.

Holloway isn’t pining for McGregor’s return. In fact, he thinks the Irish champ won’t ever fight MMA again after making such a huge payday against Mayweather. A title defense against ex-lightweight champ Frankie Edgar is likely next on Holloway’s list.

So, the 145-pound and 155-pound classes are moving on in McGregor’s wake. He left quite a stamp on both.

Diego Sanchez returns to welterweight, meets Matt Brown at UFC Fight Night 120

A welterweight bout between Matt Brown and Diego Sanchez is the latest addition to November’s UFC Fight Night 120 lineup.

UFC officials tonight announced the 170-pound match between Brown (20-16 MMA, 13-10 UFC) and Sanchez (27-10 MMA, 16-10 UFC).

Sanchez, “The Ultimate Fighter 1” winner who has competed in four different weight classes during his UFC tenure, will return to welterweight for the first time since February 2012. Sanchez, 35, is 2-3 in his past five octagon appearances with his most recent fight being a first-round knockout loss to Al Iaquinta at UFC Fight Night 108 in April.

The latest UFC Fight Night 120 card now includes:

  • Anthony Pettis vs. Dustin Poirier
  • Karl Roberson vs. Darren Stewart
  • Cezar Ferreira vs. Nate Marquardt

Street-fight story: How calling Paul Felder a 'Bobby Flay wannabe' led to a smashed nose

An MMAjunkie Radio tradition is to ask fighters about memorable street-fighting encounters. UFC lightweight Paul Felder offered up a good one during a recent in-studio appearance.

“One of my favorites was I was in college,” Felder told MMAjunkie Radio. “We were at a graduation party for the class ahead of me, and we were hanging out. This one girl brought this total d-bag. He thought, ‘These guys are all ‘actors,” not knowing I’d been doing martial arts as a little kid.”

Felder (14-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC), who’s coming off a first-round knockout of Stevie Ray at UFC Fight Night 113 in July and has been keeping busy as a commentator for the Dana White’s Contender Series in Las Vegas, went on to describe his encounter with the “total d-bag.”

“He calls me a Bobby Flay wannabe,” Felder said. “I was in the kitchen with one of my friends making microwave pizzas. He goes outside. I follow him out. Really long story short: He’s staring at me, and I was like, ‘Are you going to do something about it or just stare at me?’

“He comes running up, goes to throw a right hand … Guy throws a punch, I clinch him, and I smashed this dude’s face in so bad with knees.”

Watch the video above to hear Felder recount the fight, which at the time had him convinced he would land in jail – but instead ended in an apology.

Conor McGregor feels 'discarded' by boxing community, reacts to 'McGregor Challenge' mockery

The number of people within the boxing world who have dismissed Conor McGregor’s chances of defeating Floyd Mayweather is too long to list. “The Notorious,” however, said he’s eager to prove each of them wrong.

From analyst Max Kellerman stating he wouldn’t land a single punch on Mayweather (49-0 boxing) to Mike Tyson claiming McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) will “get killed” inside the ring, there are no shortage of pundits picking against the brash Irishman.

RelatedFighters start 'McGregor Challenge' by mocking Conor McGregor's flailing-arm warmup

McGregor said he relishes it all, though, because it gives him even more to overcome when he meets Mayweather in the Aug. 26 pay-per-view headliner at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“It’s like I’ve been discarded, and it’s like I’m not welcome here,” McGregor told reporters on today’s media conference call. “It’s certainly motivating, the disrespect and the disregard for my skill set. I look at people sometimes, and their mind is closed. They’ve got such a closed mind on how things can be done. It’s a set way and no other way.

RelatedConor McGregor 'very happy' with NSAC's 8-ounce glove exception for Floyd Mayweather fight

“It’s like when we went across the waters to another land, or when we went into space. You’ve got to have an open mind and realize there are other ways, and there’s a time and a place for every single movement.”

The criticism of McGregor from those within the boxing world has been so strong, in fact, that footage of his training has evolved into an Internet meme. Following McGregor’s open workout this past week, the likes of David Haye, Terence Crawford, Freudis Rojas and more mocked him with the “McGregor Challenge.”

RelatedBoxing broadcaster Al Bernstein discusses Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor intrigue

McGregor said the viral clips did not capture his attention on the level of certain predictions and analysis that’s been harshly slanted against him. However, he said he will enjoy throwing every moment back at his detractors should he defeat Mayweather in “The Money Fight.”

“I’ve seen some videos,” McGregor said. “It is what it is. It’s light-hearted. I don’t take it personal. If anything I see stiffness in every single one of them.”

Yes, it’s true the upcoming boxing showdown Aug. 26 between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor has yet to sell out T-Mobile Arena, but does that even matter?

Nothing is going to stop both fighters – all parties involved, really – from making massive amounts of money. Just how much of it Showtime, Mayweather, McGregor, and the UFC will be dividing among themselves remains to be seen.

The live gate, despite tickets still being available, already has reached $60 million, which already is close to the $72.2 million record set by Mayweather vs. Pacquiao in 2015. That fight also holds the record for pay-per-view buys with 4.4 million, which Mayweather-McGregor is tracking to break by a long shot, according to UFC President Dana White.

During a recent appearance on MMAjunkie Radio, longtime Yahoo! combat sports writer Kevin Iole talked numbers with George and Goze, and the number 1 billion (gulp) came up.

Really? $1 billion. That would be insane.

Watch the video above to hear the guys discuss.

Conor McGregor 'very happy' with NSAC's 8-ounce glove exception for Floyd Mayweather fight

Conor McGregor believes Wednesday’s ruling by the Nevada State Athletic Commission to permit eight-ounce gloves for his Aug. 26 boxing showdown with Floyd Mayweather gives him a significant advantage.

McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) typically competes in four-ounce gloves in the UFC but was initially faced with the prospect of fighting Mayweather (49-0 boxing) in 10-ounce gloves. The NSAC stipulates that in most cases, fights taking place at 154-pounds or above should use 10-ounce gloves.

However, after a verbal challenge from McGregor, Mayweather recently revealed on social media that he was willing to accept eight-ounce equipment.

“I’m very happy with how (the commission) handled it,” McGregor said on a conference call with reporters. “They took both fighters’ requests into consideration, and I’m very happy with it. You’ve got pros and cons on both sides, and both athletes asking for it. I am coming up in weight on the gloves. Look at what I fight with (normally).”

It’s widely assumed that lighter gloves could benefit the heavy-handed McGregor, as opposed to the more defensively minded and tactical
style of Mayweather.

UFC President Dana White agreed.

“Now we are fighting in eight-ounce gloves, and it is going to be a fight,” White said. “Anything can happen in a fight. I think it affects the contest. Yes, Floyd is faster. But he’s a defensive master. Conor hits like a truck. Smaller gloves favor him big time. It affects the fight big time.”

The NSAC also revealed that Robert Byrd would referee the contest. Kenny Bayless, the official for many of Mayweather’s recent bouts, was ruled out after previously voicing his criticism of the clash, which will see the 49-0 Mayweather taking on, in McGregor, a man making his boxing debut.

“They gave us options, and we didn’t necessarily ask for any ref in particular,” McGregor said. “There was a ref or two who gave opinions, and if that’s the case it makes it hard.

“Robert Byrd is a phenomenal ref. He lets the fight take place and steps in when he should step in. He has some links to the MMA world as well, so that’s good.”

Why the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation likes MMA's chances for 2028 Olympics

Los Angeles is set to host the 2028 Olympics after reaching a deal with the International Olympic Committee late last month, and that has the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation feeling good.

Why? Because things could’ve turned out much worse.

“Up until July, the bid to host the 2024 Games was a two-horse race between Paris and Los Angeles, which we were watching closely,” IMMAF president Kerrith Brown said in a statement. “The host city is significant, because it has the power to elect non-Olympic disciplines into the Games as demonstration sports, and it is under this banner that we would expect MMA to debut.

RelatedWould inclusion in the Olympics make MMA safer? IMMAF CEO says yes

“It would certainly have been bad news for MMA if Paris had defeated L.A., because MMA competition is outlawed in France. Since the IOC has now decided to simultaneously allocate the 2024 and 2028 Games to Los Angeles and Paris, and Los Angeles has opted to host the 2028 edition, we feel optimistic about MMA’s chances.”

Earlier this year, UFC executive Joe Carr, who announced Tuesday he was leaving the promotion, expressed optimism about the inclusion of MMA in future Olympics.

Carr said with more than 60 federations dedicated to overseeing and promoting MMA, a strong foundation to win recognition from SportAccord, the umbrella organization for the Olympics, is in place. Convincing the IOC is next.

“The thing with the Olympics is, they’re trying to get younger,” Carr told MMAjunkie Radio. “Think of the majority of those sports and who those appeal to. That’s why you see beach volleyball. Surfing is going to be in the next Olympics, and snowboarding – all these younger sports, because the fan base is dying out. What better new-age sport than MMA?”

The 2028 Los Angeles Games, it would seem, represents a golden opportunity, given MMA’s stronghold in Southern California.

“We believe our prospects for the Los Angeles Games to be strong, because MMA is a mainstream sport in the U.S. and has a significant media, commercial and political presence,” Brown said. “MMA is recognized under state laws there and in L.A. It is regulated lawfully under the Californian State Athletic Commission.

“While we will continue lobbying in France and for inclusion in 2024, I am more confident about MMA’s inclusion for 2028.”

Leonard Ellerbe on May-Mac glove change: 'Floyd wants him to have every advantage possible'

http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid4621179066001?bckey=AQ~~,AAAABvaL8JE~,ufBHq_I6FnxR-PQW_F3sm5QdUbP7D6E9&bctid=5542902882001

LAS VEGAS – Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe is pleased with the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s (NSAC) decision to change the glove size for Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor next week.

Although Mayweather (49-0 boxing) was the one to truly push the narrative to reduce glove weight from 10 ounces to 8 ounces, it was ultimately the NSAC that unanimously voted to approve the “one-time exception” that would seem to give an advantage to the bigger, heavier McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) in the Aug. 26 pay-per-view showdown at T-Mobile Arena.

RelatedTwitter – including an ecstatic Dana White – reacts to Mayweather-McGregor glove change

That’s all part of the plan, though, according to Ellerbe, who said Mayweather wants McGregor to have as many positive ticks in his column as possible going into the fight. This is just another one.

“Floyd wants him to have every advantage possible that he can have,” Ellerbe told MMAjunkie after today’s hearing in Las Vegas. “Conor is a very confident young man, and I’m fully confident he’s going to lay it on the line. He’s representing not only the UFC brand, but he’s representing his country. He has the great fans from his country. They will be there backing him, and the millions of fans across the world will be tuned in watching this terrific event. We’re excited.”

Despite the fact 8-ounce gloves mesh closer to the 4-ounce fist protection UFC lightweight champion McGregor uses in MMA, it’s actually Mayweather who has more experience fighting in the newly approved glove size. Because of that, Ellerbe said he thinks the bout will look different than it would have otherwise.

RelatedReferee and judges selected for Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing fight

“I think it will have an impact on the fight,” Ellerbe said. “From a fighter’s perspective, you’re more comfortable with fighting the smaller gloves. I’m pretty confident the fight will end in a knockout. Pretty confident. It’s something Conor wanted, something Floyd wanted, and both fighters got exactly what they wanted.

“Conor has guaranteed he’s going to knock Floyd out within four rounds. He just recently said he’s struggling to give him two rounds now. I fully expect him to be a man of his word and come out and be very aggressive in the small gloves. Floyd will be very aggressive, and it’s going to be a great fight. We’ve got a fight, ladies and gentlemen.”

Will UFC fighters watch the upcoming boxing showdown between Floyd Mayweather and one of their own, Conor McGregor?

Whether they begrudge or applaud McGregor’s one-in-a-million fight with Mayweather, the overwhelming answer is yes – UFC fighters will be watching.

RelatedConor McGregor's uncanny ability to will things into existence is why he's fighting Floyd Mayweather

At least, that’s the sense you get when they talk about “The Money Fight” on Aug. 26 at T-Mobile Arena. No matter how they expect the fight to go, no one is declaring they’ll do something else when McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) and Mayweather (49-0 boxing) headline the Showtime pay-per-view.

MMAjunkie spoke to fighters of all sizes and divisions about the matchup, and they all had their reasons for tuning in.

  • It will never be done again.
  • McGregor is being underestimated.
  • McGregor’s style is something Mayweather’s never seen.
  • McGregor has smashed expectations before, so he can smash them again.
  • A success for one MMA fighter is a success for all MMA fighters.
  • Who doesn’t want to see Mayweather get knocked out?

UFC featherweight Ricardo Lamas was a lone voice of reason in a sea of optimistic projections.

“Listening to people make a case about how McGregor’s going to win this fight, it’s like I’m in the goddamn Twilight Zone,” he said.

Still, at no point did the one-time title challenger declare he isn’t buying. And that’s pretty much the end-all for this whole experiment – you find your own reason to justify the novelty.
