Kevin Lee: I'll show Conor McGregor is human after winning 'real' title vs. Tony Ferguson

LAS VEGAS – There’s a lot of speculation as to whether Conor McGregor will ever return to the UFC after Saturday’s boxing encounter with Floyd Mayweather – more precisely, after the possible $100 million that may come with it.

Count Kevin Lee (16-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC), who’s set to meet Tony Ferguson (22-3 MMA, 12-1 UFC) with the interim lightweight title on the line at UFC 216, as one of the believers in a McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) return.

RelatedWhy Tony Ferguson says Conor McGregor is 'fighting the wrong Mexican'

“I take him as a man of his word and as a competitor,” Lee told MMAjunkie during a media day this week. “If I’m judging him as a competitor, he’s got to come back out to … You know, he’s fighting dudes old enough to be my pops, that’s coming off two years of retirement. Come back and fight a young, hungry champion.

“Then we’ll really see if you’re worthy of what some of these casual fans down there really think of them. Because you’ve got so many people – he’s transcended the sport a little bit. So many people think the man is a God or something. It doesn’t make sense to me. So I’ll come back, and I’ll show them he’s a real human.”

Of course, there’s a lot to happen before that meeting. First, there’s “The Money Fight.” Then, Lee has to be the one to halt Ferguson’s nine-fight winning streak on Oct. 7 in Las Vegas. And even if both scenarios happen, UFC president Dana White isn’t committed to the idea of unifying the title right away.

RelatedVideo: UFC 215, UFC 216 media day face-offs, where Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee get heated

Lee doesn’t see to eye-to-eye with White in that regard, dubbing the matchup “the biggest fight” for the Irishman upon his return. But it’s not like Lee is going to feel like less of a champ should that matchup never come to fruition.

“This is for the real lightweight title,” Lee said. “You can put the word interim on it all you want, but we all know McGregor is sitting on the paper champ.”

Another variable is the fourth piece of the 155-pound puzzle: Khabib Nurmagomedov. The undefeated Dagestani fighter actually was who people expected would be meeting Ferguson for the interim title. The two were scheduled to fight earlier this year before Nurmagomedov’s weight-cut issues led to a canceled UFC 209 encounter.

With Nurmagomedov unavailable to meet Ferguson, Lee was happy to step up – and get his chance to become the “true champion” in the process. But there’s always the possibility Nurmagomedov, not McGregor, is next in line to meet the Ferguson-Lee winner.

McGregor is currently ranked No. 1 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA lightweight rankings, followed by Nurmagomedov and Ferguson at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Lee currently sits at No. 8.

For now, Lee can’t really tell how things are going to unfold – or how soon he’ll be able to come back – after UFC 216. But if he ends up against Nurmagomedov, the contender is open to doing McGregor this other favor, as well.

“I’ve said it before: I’m expecting a damn good Christmas gift out of this,” Lee said. “Because with the $100 million paycheck I’m letting Conor over there have, I’m expecting something in the mail. I’m doing his hard work for him. I’m going to take out Tony.

“And after that, who knows? The Detroit card (UFC 218, set for Dec. 2) is right around the corner. I might take out Khabib, too. Take out both the people that are favored above McGregor. And then we’ll see.”

Ex-champ Andrey Koreshkov hopes he may have jumped the line for a Bellator title shot

VERONA, N.Y. – With a dominant win in the Bellator 182 main event Friday night, former welterweight champion Andrey Koreshkov would love to think he may have jumped the line to get another crack at the belt.

If nothing else, Koreshkov (20-2 MMA, 11-2 BMMA) gave Bellator President Scott Coker and matchmaker Rich Chou something to think about when he took out Chidi Njokuani (17-5 MMA, 4-1 BMMA) in the first round of their headliner – which came at a catchweight after Njokuani came in heavy for the sixth time in six years.

The fight headlined Bellator 182 at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. The main card aired on Spike following prelims on MMAjunkie.

“I feel like I had a really good performance,” Koreshkov told MMAjunkie through a translator after the fight. “I matched him standing, and obviously I finished the fight in a spectacular fashion on the ground. It wasn’t a boring fight – it was an exciting fight, and Chidi is obviously a tough opponent.

“So I feel like I earned the shot to go back to the title. I feel like with my performance today, I should get a title shot.”

But there is another fighter out there who would likely have something to say abou that. Rory MacDonald (19-4 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) signed with Bellator in 2016 after years in the UFC, where he lost a title fight in 2015. In May, he made his long-awaited promotional debut and made easy work of fellow contender Paul Daley for a second-round rear-naked choke finish.

The widely held presumption has been that MacDonald will meet champion Douglas Lima (29-6 MMA, 11-2 BMMA) for the title – though that isn’t expected to happen until 2018. Lima caught Koreshkov this past November and knocked him out to win the title in a rematch.

If Koreshkov has to wait to get the winner of Lima and MacDonald, he seems OK with it.

“Rory or Douglas, it doesn’t matter. Be ready, because I’m coming – I’m coming for the belt.”

For more from Koreshkov after his TKO win over Njokuani, check out the video above.

LFA 20 video highlights: Nick Barnes settles for questionable split with Chad Curry

Nick Barnes got the re-set on his career he was looking for on Friday night, but he had to be wondering when he realized his fight with Chad Curry was going to be a split decision.

Barnes (12-2) appeared to have handled Curry (9-2) without much concern for what the judges would say, even after he took a year off. But in the end, one of them saw the fight for Curry. Still, Barnes got the nod in the LFA 20 headliner, which took place at Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, Minn. The main card aired on AXS TV.

Check out the main-event highlights above. Additionally, Kelly Kobold-Schmitz (18-3-2) came back after six years away, but had to settle for a split draw with Christine Stanley (5-3-1). An illegal knee cost Kobold-Schmitz a point in their flyweight fight, which led to the draw.

And Travis Perzynski (22-9) battered Carl Wittsock (9-2) on the feet, then headed to the ground to put him to sleep with a rear-naked choke in the first round of their lightweight fight.

The top of Friday’s Bellator 182 card featured a pair of welterweight fights that gave the fighters an opportunity to assert their positions in the pecking order for a future title shot.

In the main event, former champ Andrey Koreshkov (20-2 MMA, 11-2 BMMA) took out Chidi Njokuani (17-5 MMA, 4-1 BMMA) in the first round in his first fight since losing the title to Douglas Lima. But was it enough to jump the line over a name like Rory MacDonald?

In the co-main event, Fernando Gonzalez (27-14 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) shocked Brennan Ward (14-6 MMA, 9-6 BMMA) with a perfectly timed guillotine choke in the third round, taking him to 7-1 in the promotion with just a split-decision loss to Michael Page as a blemish on his Bellator resume. So where does he fit in now?

Bellator 182 took place Friday at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. The main card aired on Spike following prelims on MMAjunkie.

Also on the main card, Bruna Ellen (4-1) took a split decision from Veta Artaega (3-2), and A.J. McKee (9-0) kept his perfect record as a pro with a unanimous decision win over a bloodied-up Blair Tugman (10-7)

Floyd Mayweather, Conor McGregor guaranteed purses revealed for 'Money Fight'

While it’s unclear how much money Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor ultimately will pocket for “The Money Fight,” we now have an idea.

Late Friday night, the Nevada State Athletic Commission revealed the guaranteed purses for both Mayweather and McGregor. Mayweather will take home at least $100 million, while McGregor stands to make no less than $30 million.

RelatedFloyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor weigh-ins video highlights, gallery

McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) and Mayweather (49-0 boxing) face off Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in a pay-per-view event
expected to be the most lucrative prize fight of all time. Their final purses depend on a number of factors, including total pay-per-view buys and live gate revenue.

Last week, UFC President Dana White said the event was tracking to “kill” 4.9 million pay-per-view buys, which would shatter the record of 4.6 million set by Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao in 2015. That fight, like McGregor-Mayweather, carried a $99.95 price tag. For his unanimous decision win over Pacquiao, Mayweather made $220 million.

Related50 million Americans (nearly 1 in 6) could end up watching Mayweather-McGregor fight

During their world tour last month, McGregor indicated he would “clear $100 million” if the fight sold the way it was expected to.

In 2016, McGregor said he stood to make $40 million for three UFC fights. So regardless of the final numbers, the guaranteed purse all but confirms McGregor will obliterate his largest one-year money-making total with just one fight.

Boxer, Bellator MMA's Heather Hardy: Floyd Mayweather will be aggressive vs. Conor McGregor

LAS VEGAS – Many people are skeptical about Floyd Mayweather’s comments about going on the offensive against Conor McGregor in “The Money Fight.” Heather Hardy is one person who believes him.

Hardy (20-0 boxing, 1-0 MMA), who is an active fighter in both boxing and MMA, is of the belief that Mayweather (49-0 boxing) will actually try to make a statement against McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) in Saturday’s anticipated boxing match at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

RelatedConor McGregor's final prediction for Floyd Mayweather: 'Him turning into a frozen statue'

“He’s never said that before,” Hardy told MMAjunkie. “He always defends his style. He says, ‘Look at my face. I’ve got (49 wins).’ He defends how he boxed because it’s smart boxing. This time he feels like he’s going to come out, and I think he is.

“I believe ‘Money’ May, that he’s going to come out swinging, that he’s going to stay right in his face. He said, ‘I’m not backing down, I’m not moving backwards, I’m not running around, and I’m ending the fight.’ I’m with it.”

Hardy picks Mayweather to win the fight but believes McGregor is taking the correct steps in order to maximize his chance of winning. She said the UFC lightweight champion needs to take Mayweather out of his comfort zone, and his unorthodox style of fighting could make the bout interesting.

RelatedFloyd Mayweather cautions Conor McGregor on early KO prediction: 'I can give it, and I can take it'

“He’s doing all the right things right now,” Hardy said. “He’s very awkward. I don’t say that disrespectfully. He hasn’t adopted a conventional style. He hasn’t adopted conventional training methods, and he’s trying to come out a different way. There are 49 guys who went out and tried to outbox the master, and this guy’s saying, ‘I’m just going to beat you up.'”

Dana White on Oscar De La Hoya's May-Mac tweet: Is he 'snorting coke and drinking booze?'

Oscar De La Hoya attempted to throw one final jab at the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match following weigh-ins on Friday. UFC President Dana White wasn’t having it.

De La Hoya has been critical of the Mayweather (49-0 boxing) vs. McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) fight from the moment it was officially announced. White has run him down for his commentary and today threw a massive haymaker directed at the former boxing champion and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

After De La Hoya posted a message on Twitter claiming the bout between Mayweather and McGregor is “disrespecting the sport of boxing,” White caught wind of it and took the liberty of responding (via Twitter):

WTF?!? Is this guy snorting coke and drinking booze again??!? #OscarDeLaArum pic.twitter.com/awn2bgnWNV

— Dana White (@danawhite) August 25, 2017

McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh, also had a response (via Twitter):

Don't get your panties in a twist

LAS VEGAS – The scene following the weigh-ins for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight turned into bedlam Friday at T-Mobile Arena when hundreds of McGregor supporters staged an impromptu rally.

Gathering near the exits, the fans broke into deafening and joyous chants, including the standard “ole, ole, ole, ole.’’ Others waved Irish flags with messages that, alluding to McGregor’s comments during the build-up to the fight Saturday, included: “Mayweather Can’t Read This,’’ “F*ck the Mayweathers,’’ and “I am Boxing.’’

Some fighters block out the noise, but McGregor swallows it up and uses it to fuel him.

“These people are very special and very dear to me,’’ McGregor said recently. “To see that Irish flag and those green colors, it means everything. Everywhere we go, we take over. That is it. Irish fans don’t need nothing. We create our own party.

“They have given themselves to me, and I appreciate them from the bottom of my heart. It gets me to think about it. It is an honor to have people give their time and their money for you in that way. To come across from wherever and wear the colors and shout for you.’’

Turns out it was Mayweather who emerged for the weigh-in wearing bright green, old-school underpants carrying the logo of Irish gambling company Paddy Power. He also wore green socks.

It wasn’t clear if it was a stunt, or if Mayweather is just being sponsored by Paddy Power. But the Irish fans showered him with boos nonetheless.

When asked about the pro-McGregor crowd, Mayweather responded, “They can’t fight for him.’’

Soon after, the fans were gathered in the arena exits and making themselves heard with pro-McGregor chants, ditties and traditional Irish songs.

“It is magical,’’ McGregor said of his fans. “It is what we do. There is no greater country to represent, and I appreciate every single last one of them.

Why Tony Ferguson says Conor McGregor is 'fighting the wrong Mexican'

LAS VEGAS – UFC interim lightweight title challenger Tony Ferguson calls Conor McGregor’s apparent plan for a trilogy against Nate Diaz “(expletive) ridiculous and demands the UFC champ “defend or vacate” after facing Floyd Mayweather.

“I know where your head’s at, man,” Ferguson (22-3 MMA, 12-1 UFC) said Thursday during a media day for his upcoming fight with Kevin Lee (16-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) at UFC 216. “You want to be in a money fight – look, you’re fighting the wrong Mexican, man. You’ve got to fight the one with the messed-up ears. The one that you’re fighting is into bikes.

RelatedDana White won't commit to Ferguson-Lee winner as Conor McGregor's next UFC fight

“That’s not a bad thing, but when you get done playing grab-ass in the boxing ring, you need to come back over here and defend or vacate.”

Such is the constant refrain from Ferguson as he tries to wrap UFC gold around his waist. It’s been an elusive goal as an interim title fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov (24-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) was called off last-minute earlier this year when Nurmagomedov was hospitalized prior to UFC 209. And with McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) – and his belt – tied up with “The Money Fight,” Ferguson has been stuck in a holding pattern.

As recently as Wednesday, McGregor intimated the wait to see him defend the UFC lightweight title could be even longer than expected. Two months after UFC President Dana White said McGregor wants to face Nurmagomedov in Russia, the Irish champ said he has a “trilogy fight” waiting for him in the UFC.

RelatedConor McGregor: I'd like to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov; Nate Diaz trilogy 'also on my mind'

That can be no one other than Diaz, with whom he split a pair of box office blockbusters last year. Diaz has been on the shelf since a decision loss to McGregor at UFC 202, turning down an interim title fight with Ferguson when he didn’t like the offered pay.

Rather than wait for the lightweight logjam to clear, Ferguson elected to fight Lee, a surging talent who’s won five straight in the octagon. The two meet Oct. 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to determine the replacement champ seven months after Ferguson’s first interim title bout was canceled.

Just a few months ago, it appeared the UFC would attempt to rebook Ferguson vs. Nurmagomedov a fourth time. But Ferguson said the undefeated Russian’s team nixed that possibility.

“We gave these guys opportunities,” Ferguson said. “I would have fought in December. This dude would have said, ‘OK, I’m not ready in December. I’m fighting in 2018. You saw Twitter. I had to stay off it because his dumbass manager was doing too much. You talk too much. Stick to what you’re good at, which is managing and matchmaking. Because what you’re doing is lying.

“You’re saying your client is ready in October and November, and the UFC is saying that you said you weren’t ready. Now, you’re going back on your word. I’m like, ‘You know what, I don’t have time for this (expletive).'”

So Ferguson plans to collect the belt after beating Lee. Then he’ll wait for his chance to collect the undisputed one against McGregor. He hopes Diaz doesn’t step in the way.

Conor McGregor's final prediction for Floyd Mayweather: 'Him turning into a frozen statue'

Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather stared into each other’s eyes for the last time before they strap on specially approved eight-ounce gloves, and predictably McGregor was many decibels louder.

Coming in at 153 pounds, one under the 154-pound limit for the pay-per-view spectacle, McGregor (21- 3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) screamed bloody murder at Mayweather in one last bit of gamesmanship. Mayweather (49-0 boxing), who clocked in at 149.5, mostly stared, stone-faced.

“The Money Fight” is now official, and McGregor’s prediction is that Mayweather and the world will be shocked when they step into the ring. Asked by UFC commentator Megan Olivi what to expect on Saturday, he interrupted the question.

“Him turning into a frozen statue and hitting the floor and crashing – that’s what you can expect,” McGregor said.

And the prediction for his first professional boxing match, paired against a 49-0 all time great?

“Knockout, first round,” he added.

Mayweather dismissed his opponent’s bigger size, telling Showtime commentator Jim Gray, “weight doesn’t win fights – fighting wins fights.” Off the scale, McGregor attacked the boxing champ’s physique, calling him blown-out and over-watered.

McGregor said he’ll be closer to 170 on Saturday night at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena and declared himself in peak condition.

“He’s got nothing on me, and that’s it,” the Irish UFC lightweight champ said. “He’s going to beg me to follow the rules.”

And Mayweather, content to let McGregor blow out his vocal chords, will require him to follow those Queensbury rules, lest he incur a reported seven-figure fine.

With a cascade of boos following his every word, Mayweather is either going to crush a lot of Irish dreams on Saturday night, or he’s going to go down as the victim of the greatest combat sports upset in history.

McGregor, otherwise known as “Mystic Mac,” is predicting the latter.

Luck of the Irish: 7 things that broke Conor McGregor's way to land huge Floyd Mayweather payday

Here we are on the eve of a fight that, when you really think about it, has no business happening. A 49-0 boxer vs. an 0-0 boxer in a boxing match. How could the Nevada State Athletic Commission have possibly sanctioned this?

And yet, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather (49-0 boxing) will face off Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in a pay-per-view event expected to be the most lucrative prize fight of all time.

Because that’s really what this is all about: money. A while back – the day McGregor was issued a California boxing license, in fact – is when I truly started to accept the possibility of this fight happening. It still kind of stuns me that it actually is, though.

You keep saying Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor will never fight each other and yet, Donald Trump is president.

— Simon Samano (@SJSamano) December 1, 2016

Mayweather-Pacquiao did 4.6 million PPV buys, and Floyd hauled in $220 million. You telling me #MayweatherMcGregor doesn't blow past that?

— Simon Samano (@SJSamano) December 1, 2016

All I'm saying when it comes to the #MayweatherMcGregor possibility is that money talks. The figures could be astronomical.

— Simon Samano (@SJSamano) December 1, 2016

We know Mayweather could fight whoever he wants any time. McGregor, on the other hand, had to put in a lot of work to reach this life-changing payday that could earn him $100 million, which remains only a dream for every other UFC fighter.

So how did “The Notorious” get here? How exactly did McGregor pull this off? Hard work is one answer. But you don’t break a barrier like this and make a once-thought-to-be-only fantasy fight simply with hard work.

RelatedConor McGregor's uncanny ability to will things into existence is why he's fighting Floyd Mayweather

Plenty of luck was involved, too, and here are seven things that broke McGregor’s way:

Only needing to beat Dennis Siver to earn a title shot

Conor McGregor and Dennis Siver at UFC Fight Night 59.

When McGregor fought Dennis Siver at UFC Fight Night 59 on Jan. 18, 2015, Siver already was 36 years old and on the down slope of his career. Ranked No. 10 in the UFC rankings at the time, Siver was 3-2-1 in his previous six bouts, the no-contest coming as a result of an overturned win thanks to a failed drug test.

Somehow, though, the decision was made that a win in this fight would earn McGregor a UFC title shot?

RelatedConor McGregor and the Law of Attraction, 'the most powerful thing in the world'

McGregor had yet to beat anyone ranked ahead of him (he was No. 5) and without a signature win to date. While some might point to current featherweight champion Max Holloway as a notable win, Holloway was just a 21-year-old kid and nowhere near the fighter he is today. Simply having to beat an aging Siver, which McGregor did via second-round TKO, to earn a title shot was a clear indicator that the UFC was eager to push him into the spotlight – and it worked.

Chad Mendes replacing Joe Aldo at UFC 189

McGregor and Jose Aldo embarked on a wild and crazy six-city, five-country world tour to promote their UFC 189 featherweight title fight, which is why it was such a shame that Aldo had to withdraw late.

And so on less than two weeks notice, Chad Mendes took the opportunity to face McGregor for an interim title. Mendes spent the first round taking down McGregor pretty easily and employed some solid ground-and-pound that even cut him open. But it was clear in between rounds that Mendes already was starting to gas out. His lack of cardio on short notice wouldn’t suffice for his grinding wrestling style. Sure enough, it didn’t, and McGregor capitalized with a TKO finish near the end of Round 2 by landing some hard combinations that turtled up an exhausted Mendes.

Given how that first round went, though, it makes you wonder what might’ve happened if Mendes was on a full camp.

Knocking out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds at UFC 194

There was an added benefit to Aldo pulling out of his first scheduled fight with McGregor: It gave him an extra five months get under Aldo’s skin with his trash-talk and antics during the build-up.

When they finally met at UFC 194, Aldo did something he normally wouldn’t and came out firing in the opening moments, head forward, chin out. It was reckless and provided all the momentum McGregor needed to catch him with a short left hand that knocked him out cold in just 13 seconds. The crazy thing is that Aldo actually landed, as well, but it simply didn’t faze McGregor.

RelatedConor McGregor's manager explains biggest misconception of May-Mac showdown

Why do I chalk up this fair-and-square win as a lucky break for McGregor? I’ll answer my own question with a question: Would we have seen the same result or anything close to it if they had rematched? “Getting caught” is a phrase we use in MMA for a reason. It happened to Aldo on this night.

Getting a Nate Diaz rematch we didn’t need

Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor after their UFC 202 fight. (USA TODAY Sports)

UFC President Dana White is right about McGregor’s willingness to fight anyone, any time, anywhere, and I commend him for that. There was no upside to facing Nate Diaz the first time at UFC 196 after Rafael dos Anjos was forced to withdraw from their lightweight title fight on just two weeks notice, but McGregor accepted anyway – at welterweight.

It was a decision that backfired on McGregor, who tapped out to a rear-naked choke in the second round. Business with Diaz should’ve been done there. After all, McGregor was the featherweight champion and had challengers waiting. Rather than defend his title, though, McGregor insisted on a rematch with Diaz at welterweight. It was supposed to headline the UFC’s landmark 200th pay-per-view but fell through when McGregor refused his obligations to promote the fight.

RelatedThe power of Conor McGregor, according to Dana White

Not even a feud with White would induce punishment on McGregor. The fight still happened at UFC 202 in August of last year, with McGregor winning a hard-fought majority decision in an epic encounter responsible for the most pay-per-view buys in UFC history. It truly was a gutsy performance by McGregor – and Diaz. But did we really need the fight? No. But without that unnecessary opportunity at redemption, the legend of McGregor doesn’t continue to grow and keep us moving toward “The Money Fight.”

Becoming a simultaneous 2-division champion (technically)

Conor McGregor after UFC 205.

By the time McGregor challenged Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title at UFC 205, he’d held the featherweight division hostage for 11 months by not defending his title even once. McGregor went on to dominate Alvarez and finished him via second-round TKO for the greatest win of his career.

With that, McGregor made history by becoming the first fighter in UFC history to simultaneously hold championships in two divisions. The fact that it happened on the UFC’s biggest stage, in the promotion’s debut at Madison Square Garden in New York, was icing on the cake.

RelatedConor McGregor's 10 most memorable outside-the-cage moments

A star was born beyond just MMA thanks to the history-making win. This in-cage achievement is the reason McGregor’s mainstream popularity took off. But if McGregor never intended on defending the featherweight belt in the first place – and make no mistake that he didn’t – doesn’t the “history-making” aspect sort of ring hollow? Holding two belts at the same time is the kind of accolade that starts getting you noticed by Mayweather, though.

Floyd Mayweather actually entertaining the idea of a fight

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor on the New York stop of their world tour. (USA TODAY Sports)

Mayweather had been comfortably retired for more than a year when McGregor started ramping up talk of a boxing match with the former boxing pound-for-pound king. At first, Mayweather viewed it as disrespect to even mention his name in the same breath as McGregor. On the day McGregor was issued his California boxing license, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN.com “the con game is over,” suggesting McGregor stop trying to use Mayweather’s name for his own gain.

That’s how unrealistic Mayweather-McGregor seemed.

As everyone involved in promoting this fight has reminded us, “the fans wanted this.” There are at least 150 million reasons why Mayweather decided to finally change his mind. Without the previously mentioned string of events, though, to boost McGregor’s profile, he remains a nobody to Mayweather.

Dana White changing his mind

Conor McGregor and Dana White on the Los Angeles stop of the May-Mac world tour. (USA TODAY Sports)

As crazy as it is that Mayweather changed his mind, perhaps nobody has come a longer way than White. Just earlier this year in January, he promised “an epic fall” if McGregor wanted to defy the UFC and move forward with trying to box Mayweather. Now? The UFC president is McGregor’s No. 1 fan, reminding us often that he calls him “The Unicorn” and warning anyone not to doubt his top draw.

What a time to be alive.

Why Dana White isn't attending Ronda Rousey's wedding

Despite their close relationship, UFC President Dana White won’t be attending Ronda Rousey’s wedding.

The former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Rousey (12-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) will tie the knot with heavyweight Travis Browne (18-7-1 MMA, 9-7-1 UFC) on Saturday. That, of course, overlaps with the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match, which White will be ringside for.

White revealed the scheduling conflict during an interview today on The Rich Eisen Show.

RelatedWhat news is ex-UFC champ Ronda Rousey teasing to the sounds of Led Zeppelin?

“Ronda Rousey gets married tomorrow,” White said. “Tomorrow is her wedding. She’s in a good place, she’s happy and hasn’t announced her retirement or anything like that, but she’s focusing on this wedding.”

White and Rousey have been close since the biggest star in women’s MMA history entered the UFC in February 2013. Rousey has not competed since a 48-second TKO loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 in December, and while White said he would have loved to attend the wedding, nothing is going to take his attention away from Mayweather vs. McGregor.

“Of all the days (for it to happen),” White said. “She said, ‘I’m getting married. Will you come to the wedding?’ I said, ‘Absolutely.’ The wedding’s tomorrow.”

Will the best Floyd Mayweather show up to fight Conor McGregor?

LAS VEGAS – Floyd Mayweather refers to himself as “TBE,” The Best Ever. But will he be at his best for “The Money Fight” against Conor McGregor?

A couple of obvious facts about Mayweather: He hasn’t fought since Sept. 12, 2015 – or almost two years, which is a long time ago. And he is now 40 years old, past halfway to 41.

Here are a couple more facts about Mayweather that might not be so obvious: He’s been spending every night of Fight Week at Girl Collection, indulging in the amenities of his upscale gentleman’s club, and was there past 4 a.m. on Thursday morning. He’s also been eating some Burger King.

RelatedA middle-of-the-night experience with Floyd Mayweather at his gentleman's club, Girl Collection

So what version of Mayweather should we expect to show up for the pay-per-view showdown Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas?

UFC analyst and former fighter Dan Hardy wonders.

“This is the interesting one with Floyd Mayweather, because he’s a marketing genius,” Hardy, who will call the fight fight for Sky Sports in the U.K., told MMAjunkie. “And we always know that he likes to bet on himself, so it wouldn’t surprise me that he’s doing these things to influence the betting odds in Conor McGregor’s favor, to give the impression that he’s not showing up with the intention of actually giving it his all.”

RelatedFloyd Mayweather: I'll bet on myself to beat Conor McGregor, 'most likely' biggest ever

But here’s the thing: Even though that very well could be the case, Hardy isn’t so sure Mayweather’s decisions haven’t taken a toll on him physically. During Wednesday’s final press conference, Hardy observed something particular about the former pound-for-pound boxing king.

“The one thing that stood out to me at (the final press conference) is that his voice sounded a little scratchy. He sounded a little tired,” Hardy said. “If he’s been hanging out at the strip club and eating at Burger King, then maybe that’s had an effect on his health. He might not be in the best condition right now.”

Last time we saw Mayweather in the ring he was out-pointing Andre Berto to a lackluster decision win. He was 38 then.

In McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC), Mayweather (49-0 boxing) faces a UFC lightweight champion who’s never competed professionally in a boxing match, which could explain the decisions to stay out late and eat fast food. But if there’s one thing Mayweather should be concerned about, Hardy says, even despite McGregor’s lack of boxing experience, it’s Father Time – not ring rust.

“The thing that we can’t avoid is the thing that he’s 40 years old, and there’s always a drop-off,” Hardy said. “Nobody’s Superman. And in these kinds of high-profile fights, guys can age between rounds. …

“I don’t think he’s going to really lose a step because he’s not competing. I think the only way he loses a step is because of his age.”

Dana White won't commit to Ferguson-Lee interim title winner as Conor McGregor's next MMA fight

LAS VEGAS – The UFC may be putting on an interim UFC lightweight title fight between Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee at UFC 216, but that doesn’t mean the winner is certain to fight Conor McGregor next.

UFC President Dana White was asked if whoever wins between Ferguson (22-3 MMA, 12-1 UFC) and Lee (16-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) will be the next to share the octagon with UFC lightweight champion McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) following Saturday’s boxing match with Floyd Mayweather. He said he has thought much beyond the upcoming contest and wouldn’t confirm any scenarios for “The Notorious.”

“I don’t know, we’ll see,” White told reporters at Thursday’s UFC 216 media day. “I haven’t focused on anything except this fight (between Mayweather and McGregor).”

UFC 216 takes place Oct. 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

McGregor, No. 1 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA lightweight rankings, hasn’t competed in MMA since he won the UFC lightweight title with a second-round knockout of Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. He is apparently planning to return to the octagon after his bout with Mayweather, potentially as soon as December.

The Irishman said earlier this week that he has a trilogy fight with rival Nate Diaz, ranked No. 7, waiting on him when he returns to the octagon, adding further credence to White’s comments that he might not face No. 3-ranked Ferguson or No. 8-ranked Lee next.

That news came as a surprise to Ferguson, who reacted with a frustrated tone when told of McGregor’s comments

“Trilogy fight? You are (expletive) ridiculous,” Ferguson said. “Defend or vacate. You want you money fight. You’re fighting the wrong Mexican. … When you get done playing grab-ass in the boxing ring come back and defend or vacate.”

Bellator 182's Joey Davis' modest goals for MMA career? 'I want to be the next big thing'

Joey Davis may have just started his professional MMA career, but he’s already thinking big.

“I want to be the next big thing,” Davis said. “I want to be the next big star. I’m going to be the champion. What’s going to happen after I’m the champion, I don’t know. But I’m going to be the champion.

Looking at Davis’ one-fight pro MMA record, one might be tempted to tell the 23-year-old to hit the brakes on that one. But, when you’re a four-time NCAA Division II national champion who stayed unbeaten throughout 131 wrestling matches, some confidence is warranted.

Davis returns to the Bellator cage tonight, almost exactly one year after a successful Bellator debut. Davis (1-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA), who took a decision over Keith Cutrone at Bellator 160 to kick off his pro MMA career, meets Justin Roswell (1-1 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) a 175-pound catchweight preliminary card bout.

Bellator 182 takes place at Turning Stone Resort Casino, in Verona, N.Y. The main card airs on Spike and prelims stream on MMAjunkie.

Davis, who also built an unbeaten five-fight amateur MMA record before turning pro, understands the volatile nature of the fight game. But, as someone who spent an entire life – successfully – competing, he is also aware of his own power.

“There’s no way I can be beat if I put my mind to it,” Davis said. “Fighting is a very tough sport. You just get hit and knocked out., god forgive. But I know if I put all my abilities to the test, and I know I’m in the best shape I can be, I am very hard to deal with. Very tough.”

Bellator 182's Brennan Ward wants you excited more than he wants you to see his hand raised

VERONA, N.Y. – For Bellator welterweight Brennan Ward, it’s more important that you’re cheering his performance than it is you’re seeing him merely get his hand raised.

So in tonight’s Bellator 182 co-main event at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y., don’t expect him to get in there and just grind out a win – even if he knows he’s perfectly capable of doing just that.

“If I want to, I can wrestle-(expletive) anyone on this entire roster,” Ward told MMAjunkie. “… I choose to not do that. … If I decide to hit the switch and be a boring fighter, dude, I’ll go out and lay on people. I really will. I take people’s backs and let them up.”

Tonight, Ward (14-5 MMA, 10-5 BMMA) takes on Fernando Gonzalez (26-14 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) in the co-feature on Spike following prelims that stream on MMAjunkie.

Not surprisingly, he plans on putting on a show. To hear more from the East Coaster on why that’s important, check out the video above.
